The brain is a complex and complicated piece of ourselves and it is critical to understand the\u00a0brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Neuroplasticity allows the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain to compensate for injury and disease and to adjust their activities in response to new situations or to changes in their environment.<\/span><\/p>

Also known as\u00a0neura<\/em>l plasticity, or\u00a0<\/em>brain<\/em>\u00a0plasticity, is the ability of\u00a0neural networks<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0brain<\/a>\u00a0to change through growth and reorganization. These changes range from individual\u00a0neuron pathways<\/a>\u00a0making new connections, to systematic adjustments like\u00a0cortical remapping<\/a>. Examples of neuroplasticity include circuit and network changes that result from\u00a0learning\u00a0a new ability, environmental influences, practice, and\u00a0psychological stress.<\/span><\/p>

Neuroplasticity was once thought by\u00a0neuroscientists\u00a0to manifest only during childhood, but research in the latter half of the 20th century showed that many aspects of the brain can be altered (or are “plastic”) even through adulthood.\u00a0However, the developing brain exhibits a higher degree of plasticity than the adult brain.\u00a0Activity-dependent plasticity\u00a0can have significant implications for healthy development, learning,\u00a0memory, and recovery from\u00a0brain damage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
